What is the endocrine system?
The endocrine system is a collection of glands that secrete hormones as chemical messengers to regulate the body's systems

What is homeostasis?
Homeostasis is where the body maintains an optimum internal state e.g. body temperature

What is negative feedback?
Negative feedback is the loop used by homeostasis to bring about a change in the body, bringing it back to optimum conditions

What 2 hormones does the Thyroid gland secrete?
Thyroxine (plays a crucial role in heart and digestive function, metabolism, brain development, bone health, and muscle control) Calcitonin ( is involved in helping to regulate levels of calcium and phosphate in the blood)

Glucose is a simple sugar and an important energy source in the body

Insulin which is produced in the pancreas

What is glycogen?
A substance that excess glucose is stored as in the liver

The pituitary gland, found in the brain between the hypothalamus and the pineal gland, is known as the 'master gland' as the hormones it produces control so many processes in the body

Luteinizing Hormone which triggers ovulation in females.

Follicle Stimulating Hormone stimulates the growth and maturation of an ovarian follicle

Where is the adrenal gland located and what hormone does it produce?
The adrenal gland is found at the top of the gallbladder and produces adrenaline

What is adrenaline?
A hormone that increases blood circulation, breathing rate, metabolism and prepares muscles for exertion. It is responsible for fight or flight response

What is the central nervous system?
The central nervous system is a complex network of nerves and cells that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord to various parts of the body

What is the automatic nervous system?
the part of the nervous system responsible for control of the bodily functions not consciously directed, such as breathing, the heartbeat, and digestive processes.

What is the parasympathetic nervous system ?
The parasympathetic nervous system is part of the autonomic nervous system. It controls the "rest and digest" functions of the body

What is the sympathetic nervous system?
The sympathetic nervous system is part of the autonomic nervous system.. It controls the body's "fight or flight" responses, or how the body reacts to perceived danger.

What is the peripheral nervous system?
The peripheral nervous system is the umbrella term for all the nervous system functions that are NOT part of the central nervous system

Amino acids are organic compounds that combine to form proteins

Lipids are molecules made up of fats, oils, waxes, and sterols
