What was the initial concern about a female ruler?
England had only be ruled by a female once before, which resulted in a civil war as many had refused to accept Matlida as queen and supported stephen.

What were the reasons to suggest that a female ruler would weaken the monarchy?
A woman would be unable to control faction. A woman would be unable to lead an army into battle. A woman would was expected to marry, but that created further problems (women were to be subservient to their husbands)

If she married an englishman the power of his family would increase and they could dominate court. If she married a foreigner there were fears that the country would be dominated by foreigners.

The rebels did get to the gates of London, but Marys resolution and refusal to leave the city were factors in its defeat and a sign that a female ruler was not weak.

How did the rebellion despite its defeat have an effect on the marriage?
The marriage did not take place until 12 months after mary came to the throne, and after the marriage Philip spent more time abroad than in the country, limiting his influence to at best a distant confidant.
