Simple Reflex Arc
A rapid, innate, automatic and protective response to a stimuli
1 of 12
Sensory Neurone
carries impulses from the receptor
2 of 12
Intermediate Neurone
Links the sensory neurone to the motor neurone
3 of 12
Motor Neurone
Carries the impulse to the effector, which is usually muscle
4 of 12
Why are reflex actions fast?
Because the neurone pathway is short - only 3 neurones
5 of 12
Why are reflex actions important?
They protect the body from harmful stimuli. They are also involuntary and do not have to be learned as they are effective from birth.
6 of 12
Sensory Nervous System
Carries impulses from the receptor the the Central Nervous System(CNS).
7 of 12
Motor Nervous System
Carries impulses from the CNS to the effector.
8 of 12
Voluntary Nervous System
Carries impulses to muscles under our voluntary control.
9 of 12
Autonomic Nervous System
Carries impulses from the CNS to glands, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle under our voluntary control.
10 of 12
Sympathetic Nervous System
Stimulates effectors and so speeds up activity
11 of 12
Parasympathetic Nervous System
Inhibits effectors so slows down activity
