A specialised network of cells in the human body; our primary internal communication system.

Main functions of the nervous system?
To collect, process, and respond to information in the environment and to coordinate the working of different organs and cells in the body.

What are it's 2 sub-systems?
Central Nervous System and Peripheral Nervous System

What's the CNS made up of?
The brain and spinal chord

What's the brain?
Centre of all conscious awareness. Outer layer = cerebral cortex - highly developed in humans - higher mental functions

What's the spinal chord?
An extension of the brain - responsible for reflex actions such as pulling your hand away from something hot

What's the autonomic nervous system? ANS
Governs vital functions in the body such as breathing, heart rate and digestion

What's the somatic nervous system? SNS
Controls muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors.

Subdivisions of the ANS?
Sympathetic state & parasympathetic state

What is the parasympathetic state?
Rest & digest - controls the relaxed state, conserving resources and promoting digestion and metabolism. Opposes the sympathetic state.

What is the sympathetic state?
Activates internal organs for emergencies eg. fight or flight response - increased heart rate, rapid breathing, decreased digestive activity.
