Define autonomic nervous system
part of nervous system responsible for controlling the involuntary motor activities of the body.
1 of 20
Define CNS (central nervous system)
Central part of nervous system, composed of brain+ spinal cord.
2 of 20
Define PNS (peripheral nervous system)
Sensory + motor nerves connecting the sensory receptors and effectors to the CNS
3 of 20
Define the SNS (somatic nervous system)
The motor neurones under conscious control
4 of 20
What is the CNS made of?
Grey matter (non-myelinated nerve cells) + white matter (longer, myelinated nerve cells)
5 of 20
What is the PNS made up of?
Neurons that carry impulse to + from the CNS (neurones)
6 of 20
What must a communication system enable?
1) detect changes in environment 2)cell signalling 3)co-ordination of a range of effectors to carry out responses to the sensory input 4) suitable responses.
7 of 20
What is the nervous system divided into?
CNS + PNS
8 of 20
What is the CNS divided into?
brain + spinal cord.
9 of 20
What is the PNS divided into?
sensory + motor system.
10 of 20
What is the motor system divided into?
SNS + autonomic nervous system (ANS)
11 of 20
composition of the spinal cord?
1) Protected by vertebral column 2) Between each vertebrae=action potentials carried around body via peripheral nerves.
12 of 20
composition of PNS?
sensory + motor neurones= bundled together in a connective tissue sheath to form nerves
13 of 20
Role of SNS?
1)Sensory neurone dendrons enter CNS= conduct action potentials from sensory receptors. 2) cell bodies in dorsal root leading into spinal cord. 3)short axon in CNS
14 of 20
Features of Somatic nervous system?
1)Under voluntary control 2) Carry impulses from CNS to skeletal muscle 3) Most neurones are myelinated 4) connections to effectors consist of 1 neurone
15 of 20
Features of Autonomic nervous system?
1) involuntary control 2) Impulses from CNS to cardiac+ smooth muscle in gut wall+ glands 3)Non-myelinated 4) connections to effectors consist of 2 neurones (ganglion)
16 of 20
What is the autonomic nervous system divided into?
Parasympathetic + sympathetic systems.
17 of 20
Features of Parasympathetic systems?
1) most active in sleep+relaxation 2)varied length of pre-ganglionic neurones 3) Post-ganglionic neurones secrete acetylcholine 4)effects = decrease heart rate, constricts pupils, reduce ventilation rate, sexual arousal.
18 of 20
Features of Sympathetic systems?
1) most active in stress 2) short pre-ganglionic neurones 3)post-ganglionic neurones secrete noradrenaline 4)effects= increased heart rate, dilate pupils, increase ventilation rate, ******
19 of 20
Define Ganglion?
Ganglion=.is a nerve cell cluster or a group of nerve cell bodies located in the autonomic nervous system
