What is the inner core?
The centre of the earth and also the hottest part of the earth. It's solid and made up of iron and nickel with temperatures of up to 5000 degrees celcius
1 of 9
What is the outer core?
A liquid layer, also made up of iron and nickel. It's extremely hot
2 of 9
What's the mantle?
The widest section of the earth (2900km thick). It's made up of semi-molten rock called magma.
3 of 9
What's the crust?
The outer layer of the earth. It's a thin layer between 0 and 60 km thick
4 of 9
What are the 3 layers of the mantle and their rigidity?
Lower mantle (semi-rigid), upper mantle (asthenosphere)(flowing), Upper mantle (rigid)
5 of 9
What's the Mohorovicic discontinuity?
The boundary lying between the crust and the mantle of the earth across which seismic waves change velocities
6 of 9
What are the 2 types of crust?
Oceanic crust and continental crust
7 of 9
What are the features of the continental crust?
20-60 km thick, 3 billion years old, major component is granite and it can't be recycled
8 of 9
What are the features of oceanic crust?
10 km thick, 70-100 million years old, major component is basalt and it can be recycled
