What are the different types of judges?
District judges, reorders, circuit judges, high court judges (puisne), lords justices of appeal, justices of the supreme court

What are district judges?
They work in the magistrates and county court, work full time fully paid, can sit alone or with lay magistrates, small claims, sit 15-50 days a year, 5 year term

What are recorders?
Part time in the crown court, sometimes county court, 5 year term, 15 days a year

What are circuit judges?
Circuit judges sit in the crown court and county court, full time basis

What are Justices of the supreme court?
Sit in the supreme court

Qualifications needed to be a district judge?
Must be a barrister/solicitor/legal executive for at least 5 years

Qualifications needed to be a recorder?
Must be a solicitor/barrister/legal executive who have been working for 7, usually not accepted until 15 years

Qualifications to be a circuit judge?
Solicitors/barristers/legal executives are eligable to apply, expected to live close to the court

Qualifications to be a high court judge?
rights of audience in high court for 7 years and been a circuit judge for at least 2 years

Qualifications for a court of appeal judge?
practice in high court for 7 years or be an existing high court judge, now possible for solicitors and barristers

Qualifications for justice of the supreme court?
nominated by the prime minister on the basis of a list drawn up by the Lord chancellor, appointment is made by the queen

Who deals with the appointment process?
the judicial appointments commission

What is the criteria of judges on intellectual capacity?
high level of expertise in chosen area, ability to absorb and analyse information quickly

Criteria on personal qualities?
integrity, independence of mind, sound judgement, decisiveness, objectivity

Authority and communication skills?
Ability to inspire respect and confidence, ability to maintain authority when challenged, deal fairly, ability to understand, commit to justice, fair treatment, patience, diversity

Efficiency?
ability to work at speed and under pressure, ability to work constructively with others

Leadership and management skils?
Stategic objectives, ability to motivate, support, engage, organise, encourage

What is the judicial commission made up of?
5 lay members, 5 judges, 1 barrister, 1 solicitor, 1 magistrate, 1 tribunal member
