The immune system

?
Natural antimicrobial substances =
Lysosomes (tears, sweat) Hydrochloric acid (gastric juices) and Inferons (produced by T cells and lymphs - invade viruses)
1 of 14
First lines of defence (non specific)
skin - prevents entry and minimises further entry into the body)
2 of 14
Compliment system role?
proteins in plasma activate response to microbes by binding to bacteria walls to kill them and attract phagocytes to the area of infection to stimulate phagocytosis
3 of 14
Mucus membranes and their roles
Goblet cells - blanket of mucus over ciliated cells which traps debris and pathogens, and the mucucilary escalator where cilia beat faster sweeping the mucus into the GIT where macrophages function
4 of 14
What is phagocytosis?
neutrofils and macrophages eat cells. they are attracted to foreign substances through chemotaxis (chemical that send signals) before WBC engulfs them
5 of 14
inflammatory response mechanisms?
vasodilation (phagocytes to the area), increased vascular permeability, migration of white blood cells
6 of 14
Debris is drained by the ?
lymphatic system
7 of 14
what does the lymphatic system activate?
T and B lymphocytes and developing acquired immunity
8 of 14
Specific defence mechanisms function?
target specific pathogens and forms specific antibodies (immune response)
9 of 14
what function does the 3rd line of denfense have?
memory function
10 of 14
what hormone is responsible for producing mature T lymphocytes?
thymosin (critical to cell mediated immunity)
11 of 14
What happens in cell mediated immunity?
once the macrophage has engulfed the antigen it can present on the surface - antigen presenting cell
12 of 14
T lymphocytes turn into 3 subtypes ?
Memory T's (respond to the same encounter with the same antigen), cytotoxic T's (killer cells which release cytotoxic materials and cause cell death) and Helper T's (most common, produce cytosines and stimulate production of antibodies)
13 of 14
what are B lymphocytes responsible for?
production of immunoglobins - proteins that bind to and destroy antigens or activate compliment system
