Evaporation
Water returns to the atmosphere in vapour form once it has been warmed by the sunlight.

Precipitation
Moisture falling from the atmosphere in the form as rain, snow, sleet or hail.

Overland flow
Rainfall flows quickly over the surface to reach rivers and lakes.

Through Flow
Rainwater soaks into the soil (infiltration). The water flows through the soil until it reaches a river.

Ground water flow
Once it has entered the soil, rainwater soaks into the rock below. It moves through pores and joints.

Transpiration
Water vapour is lost through the stomata in the leaves.

Percolation
Water flows vertically through the soil and rocks.

Plants, trees and buildings collect precipitation.
