The Expanding Universe

?
What is the doppler effect?
The doppler effect is the change of wavelength (and frequency) of the waves from a moving source due to the motion of the source towards or away from the observer.
1 of 6
What happens when the source moves away from the observer?
When the source moves away from the observer, the observed wavelength increases and the frequency decreases
2 of 6
What happens when the source moves towards the observer?
When the source moves towards the observer, the observed wavelength decreases and the frequency increases.
3 of 6
How can we demostrate the doppler effect?
The doppler effect can be demonstrated using sound waves. E.g. an ambulance siren will sound different depending on if it is moving away from you or towards you.
4 of 6
What is red shift?
Red shift is an increase in the wavelength of electromagnetic waves emitted by a star or galaxy due to its motion away from us. The faster the galaxy/star's speed, the greater the red shift.
5 of 6
What is blue shift?
Blue shift is a decrease in the wavelength of electromagnetic waves emitted by a star or galaxy due to its motion towards us . the faster the speed, the greater the blue shift.
