What does Socrates question about good when speaking with Euthyphro in one of Plato's dialogues?
"Is something good because God approves of it, or does God approve of something because it is good?".
1 of 7
Give an example of the Euthyphro Dilemma.
Is it wrong because God says "Thou shall not kill" which would mean that if God said "Thou shall kill" then murder would be right. Does God say this because it is intrinsically wrong to murder?
2 of 7
What is the first position of the Euthyphro Dilemma?
Divine Command Theory.
3 of 7
What is Divine Command Theory?
The origin of right and wrong in the world came directly from God's commands.
4 of 7
What is the problem with Divine Command Theory?
Whatever God chooses is right, then why should we think of him as good? God cannot choose wrong as he can only choose right.
5 of 7
What is the second position of the Euthyphro Dilemma?
God is good because he always chooses right over wrong.
6 of 7
What is the question left by the second position of the Euthyphro Dilemma?
Where do right and wrong come from if they don't come from God?. How could there be a higher authority than God to put in place universal morals? If such an authority existed then surely it would be God.
