What's the endocrine system?
Works alongside nervous system to control vital functions in the body, however, it's slower but is more powerful with widespread effects.

How does the endocrine system work?
Glands produce hormones (eg. thryroid - thyroxine) in which the hormones are secreted into the bloodstream and affect any cell that has a receptor for that particular hormone.

Which hormone does the thryroid gland produce? What's it's effects?
Produces thyroxine. Increases heart rate and metabolic rates, which in turn affects growth plates.

What's the effect of testosterone?
The major male hormone, responsible for sex drive, development of the sex organs, and changes that take place during puberty

What's the effect of Melatonin
Responsible for feelings of 'alertness' throughout the day

What's the hypothalamus?
Part of the brain that communicates with the pituitary gland

What's the pituitary gland?
The main endocrine gland in the brain, the 'master gland', controlling the release of hormones from all other endocrine glands in the body

What's the Thyroid gland?
Located in the neck; controls rate at which the body produces nutrients.

What's the parathyroid?
4 small glands located on and around the thyroid, controlling the level of calcium in the blood

What's the adrenal glands?
Located on top of each kidney and secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream

What's the pancreas?
Located in the upper abdomen; secretes hormones to control blood sugar

What's the ovaries (female only)?
Involved in female reproduction and produces female sex hormones

What's the testes (male only) ?
Involved in male reproduction; produces sperm and testosterone
