The early atmosphere.

?
The earths early atmosphere was formed by gases produced....
in volcanoes.
1 of 6
What did the early atmosphere contain....
large amounts of carbon dioxide and water vapour.Very little amounts of oxygen and other gases.
2 of 6
How were oceans formed?
The earth cooled and the water vapour condensed to form liquid water. This water became the oceans.
3 of 6
How was carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere?
Carbon dioxide dissolved into the oceans. Marine organisms used this to make calcium carbonate for shells. The shells of these organisms fell to the sea bed, becoming sediment. Over millions of years squashed sediment becomes sedimentary rock
4 of 6
How was oxygen added into the atmosphere?
Forms of life evolve in the oceans and photosynthesis begins. Oxygen builds up in the oceans and then builds up in the atmosphere.
5 of 6
Why cant scientists be certain about the composition of the early atmosphere?
Nobody was alive to know for sure. They had to use clues such as the gases produced by volcanoes today and the atmospheres of other planets in the solar system. Iron compounds found in very old rocks that could only form if there was no oxygen.
