29 Sep - 3 Oct 1918. 4 years of war, and military defeat was inevitable so German leaders appealed for an end to war and a new government. 3 Oct new government created, led by Prince Max of Baden.

31 Oct - 8 Nov 1918. Kiel sailors mutinied after shock of defeat and economic crisis, this quickly spread. Rebels demanded the Kaiser to abdicate.

Abdication on 9 Nov 1918. Friedrich Ebert, leader of SPD, became Chancellor of government (left-wing coalition)
