The practice of tightly wrapping young girls feet in bandages to prevent them from growing.

Small feet on adult women were seen as a sign of beauty and status.

How did footbinding happen?
Before binding the feet in bandages, the toes were broken and bent under the soles - an extremely painful process which often resulted in lifelong disability.
