In April 1961, 1400 exiles landed at the bay of pigs. However, Castro had found out that they were coming and the exiles were met by 20,000 cuban troops armed with modern weapons. All the exiles were either captured or killed.

20th October 1962- Kennedy ordered a naval blockade around cuba to prevent soviet missiles arriving in cuba. Also he was pressured into doing certain things by the doves (anti-war) and the hawks (war).

Background to the crisis
Cuba is a large island that is 90 miles away from Florida. It had been an American ally. America owned most of the businesses on Cuba and had a huge naval base there. Kennedy supported Batista and supplied them with economic and military support.

How was the missile crisis solved?
Naval Blockade - a ban on the soviet union to stop all import and exports to and from Cuba and stop their ships. A Hotline- between the Kremlin and The White House. The test ban treaty on 25th July 1963
