The Cognitive Approach

?
The cognitive approach
The study of mental processes
1 of 9
Inference
Mental processes are 'private' so psychologists study them indirectly. Inferences are used to make assumptions about what is going on in someone's brain based on their behaviour.
2 of 9
Theoretical models
These models are used when describing and explaining mental processes.
3 of 9
Information processing approach
A theoretical model which suggests info flows through the cognitive system through a sequence of stages which include input, storage and retrieval (multi-store model of memory).
4 of 9
Computer models
Programmes that run on a computer to imitate the human mind. Computer models are useful for developing artificial intelligence.
5 of 9
The 'computer analogy'
The central processing unit (the brain), the concept of coding (turning info into useable format) and 'stores' to hold info.
6 of 9
Schema
Schemas are packets of info developed through experience. They act as a 'mental framework' for the interpretation of oncoming info. Babies are born with simple motor schema for innate behaviours e.g. sucking and grasping.
7 of 9
Cognitive neuroscience
Cognitive neuroscience is the scientific study of the influence of brain structures on mental processes. Advances in brain scanning allows scientists to describe the neurological basis of mental processing.
8 of 9
Examples of cognitive neuroscience in psychology
Reserach into memory has linked episodic and semantic memories to opposite sides of the prefrontal cortex.
