The Johnson era was a high point. A constitutional amendment in 1964 stated that no one should be deprived of the right to vote (enacted into law in 1965). Discrimination was ended in public accommodation + employment by law in the Civil rights Act.

What Limitations to progress were there in 1965-92?
63% of African Americans graduated from high school compared to 77% of whites. 11% of AA graduated college 22% of whites did. 1/3 of African Americans lived below the poverty line.

What was affirmative action?
To compensate African Americans for the lack of opportunities and discrimination in the past, by giving them more of a share in national prosperity. Supported by congress with the Equal Opportunity Act of 1972.

What was 'Busing'?
The policy of forcing integration in schools by busing African American children into white areas. Did lead to greater integration, the policy declined in the late 1970s due to lack of local support.

What progress was made by 1992?
8000 African Americans holding office in 1992 (only 100 in 1964). There were 36 black representatives in congress. Jesse Jackson raised the possibility of a black presidential candidate.

What was the Rodney King affair?
An assault of black motorist Rodney King, by white police in LA in 1991. An all-white jury acquitted the officers. The case highlighted many remaining issues of inequality.
