What does the heart do?
1. Is a Cardiac muscle 2. Acts as a pump for a double circulatory system

The left hand side of the heart, order of flow?
OXYGENATED BLOOD returning from the lungs - Pulmonary Vein- Left Atrium- Left Ventricle- Aorta - the body
4 of 24
The right hand side of the heart, order of flow?
-DEOXYGENATED BLOOD returning from the body - Vena Cava-Right Atrium-Right Ventricle-Pulmonary Artery= to the Lungs

What do capillary's do?
Carry blood to and from the bodys cells
6 of 24
What do veins do?

9 of 24
What is the Function of White Blood Cells?
To protect the body against disease
10 of 24
What is the function of Platelets?
These bind together to form clots which prevent bleeding
11 of 24
What is the Function of Plasma?
Contains dissolved food and contains waste, proteins and amino acids which are transported to cells in the body and used for growth and repair.

Whats the definition of Cardiac Output?
"The amount of blood pumped out of the heart in once minute"
13 of 24
How do you work out Cardiac Output?
Heart Rate x Stroke Volume
14 of 24
Whats the definition of Stroke Volume?
"The amount of blood forced out of the heart per beat"
15 of 24
Whats the Definition of Heart Rate?
"The number of times the heart beats per in one minute?

What is the order of blood vessels?
When blood leaves the heart it passes through the Arteries - These then branch off into Arterioles smaller but more numerous- Then when it reaches the muscle blood passes into Capillaries even smaller but more of them- At the capillaries the blood
17 of 24
Order of blood vessels part 2
gives up its oxygen and takes in Carbon Dioxide- The blood starts its journey back to the heart in the Veins - Then into larger Veins before returning to the heart.

What is Vascular Shunt?
The re-distribution of blood.
21 of 24
What is blood pressure?
The force of blood against artery walls-can easily be measured by taking the pressure at an artery in the arm.
22 of 24
What is Systolic Pressure?
Its the pressure of blood flow on the Arteries when the Left ventricle contracts.
23 of 24
What is Diastolic Pressure?
