Inputs
receiving signals
1 of 14
Wiring
signal transduction
2 of 14
Outputs
responses
3 of 14
Basic biological circuit
receptor --> signal transduction pathway --> response
4 of 14
Signals
secreted by one cell and detected by another cell that expresses the corresponding receptor
5 of 14
Receptors
can be located at the cell surface or inside the cell
6 of 14
Protein kinase
proteins traverse cell membrane, receptor outside cell, triggers response inside cell
7 of 14
Ion channel receptors
domain on outside of cell binds ligand specifically, causes a conformational change, opening the channel, flooding in of ions triggers next step in biological process
8 of 14
G protein-linked receptors
ligand domain on cell surface detects signal, domain on inside of the cell that will trigger a signal as a response to ligand binding outside cell
9 of 14
Cytoplasmic receptor
steroid hormone (ligand) enter the cell, complex formed between the hormone and the steroid hormone receptors, receptor dissociates from the chaperone, receptor enters the nucleus, acts as transcription factor
10 of 14
Direct signal transduction
results from action of the receptor itself on effector proteins, protein kinase cascade, response is amplified
11 of 14
Indirect transduction
uses second messenger to amplify the interaction between receptor binding and cellular reaction
12 of 14
Second messengers
cAMP, cGMP, lipids, calcium ions, nitric oxide
13 of 14
Serotonin
rapid increase in intracellular cAMP concentration, involved in pain control, sleep/wake control and mood
