Midbrain
A portion of the central nervous system associated with vision, hearing, motor control, sleep/wake, arousal (alertness), and temperature regulation.
1 of 9
Cerebral Hemisphere
The cerebral hemisphere is one half of the cerebrum, the part of the brain that controls muscle function and and also controls speech, thought, emotions, reading, writing and learning.
2 of 9
Thalamus
There are extensive nerve networks that send signals around the brain. The thalamus is involved in sensory and motor signal relay and the regulation of consiousness and sleep.
3 of 9
Hypothalamus
Is responsible for the production of essential hormones. These hormones govern physiological fuctions such as temperature regulation, thirst, hunger, sleep, mood, sex drive and the release of other hormones in the body.
4 of 9
Pituitary
A part of the endocrine system and produces critical hormones.
5 of 9
Pons
A message station between several areas of the brain. Helps relay messages between the cortex and cerebellum. It plays a key role in our sleep cycle with dreams when REM occurs.
6 of 9
Medulla
Carries out and regulates life substaining functions such as breathing heart rate and swallowing.
7 of 9
Spinal Cord
Connects a large part of the peripheral nervous system to the brain. Information reaching the spinal cord through sensory neurones and transmitted up into the brain.
8 of 9
Cerebellum
Recieves information from the sensory system, the spinal cord and other parts of the brain and then regulates motor movement. The cerebellum cordinates voluntary movements such as posture, balance, coordination, and speech.
