Thomas Darling went hare-hunting with his uncle, and when he returned he fell ill and the next day began having fits.

Hallucinations of green angels and cats, and when he was in the woods he said he'd met a woman with whom he'd had a disagreement.

Who were the suspects?
Alice Gooderidge and Elizabeth Wright, both of whom had previous reputations for being witches. Darling may have accused her because of this.

When was Alice Gooderidge arrested?
In April, after she visited Darling and his hallucinations became worse. She confessed to witchcraft after a long period of torture and starvation. She died in custody before she could be heard at trial.

Who was John Darrell?
An exorcist who was called in after Darling's fits continued. He had been reprimanded once before for falsely accusing a woman named Margaret Roper of witchcraft. Successfully exorcised Darling

Who was William Somers?
Darrell exorcised him in Nottingham in 1597. When he was questioned, he confessed that his possession was fraudulent.

Who investigated the case?
The Archbishop of York, who set up a commission to investigate the case. Alice Freeman, the woman Somers accused, was immediately freed.

What happened afterwards?
Darrell was examined by the Archbishop of London and his chaplain, Samuel Harsnett.

What happened to John Darrell?
Somers confessed Darrell had told him to fake his symptoms and exorcism. He was unable to resume his career as a minister.

What were the outcomes of the Boy of Burton?
A canon was drawn up by the Archbishop of London in 1604 which forbade clergymen from practising exorcism without a license. Harsnett also wrote a book called 'A Discovery of the Fraudulent Practices of John Darrell'.
