Why does a vein have a large space ?
It has a large space for blood to flow easily back to the heart
2 of 17
What do valves do ?
They stop the blood flowing backwards, so that is returned to the heart
3 of 17
What is the wall of the vein like ?
thinner wall than artery
4 of 17
What is in the middle section of the arteries ?
a space where blood flows
5 of 17
Describe the walls of the arteries
Thick wall of muscle and elastic fibers
6 of 17
What are capillaries adapted to do ?
To exchange substances between the blood and body cells
7 of 17
Describe the wall of the cell of the capillary
one cell thick
8 of 17
What are the waste products of the capillary ?
e.g. carbon dioxide + other cell products, e.g. hormones
9 of 17
What do the arteries do ?
Arteries (AWAY) carry the blood away from the heart
10 of 17
What do the pulmonary arteries do ?
carry oxygenated blood to the body
11 of 17
What do veins do ?
Carry blood towards the heart
12 of 17
What do the pulmonary veins carry ?
Deoxygenated blood from the body back to the heart
13 of 17
What do capillaries do ?
They exchange materials, such as oxygen, glucose and carbon dioxide with body tissues
14 of 17
What is a key function of blood ?
To deliver oxygen and glucose to cells for respiration + removal of carbon dioxide
