The Blood

?
Explain why an increase in the heart rate during execise is necessary
Increased blood flow. More oxygen supplied (hae..). More glucose supplied, which means higher rates of respiration (transfers this glucose to energy). This is because more energy is needed as muscles doing more. The carbon dioxide is removed in blood
1 of 8
What are the main parts of the blood
Plasma, Platelets, Red blood cells and white blood cells
2 of 8
Give functions of white blood cells
white blood cells form part of the immune system, defending the body against microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. (antibodies, engulf, antitoxins)
3 of 8
What are platelets
Platelets are a tiny component of the blood whose function is to stop bleeding by clotting blood vessel injuries
4 of 8
What are blood plasmas
Blood is a tissue and consists of a fluid called plasma in which red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are suspended.
5 of 8
What are the functions of blood plasma
Blood plasma transports: ■ carbon dioxide (respiration) from the organs to lungs (to be breathe out) ■ soluble products of digestion (e.g. glucose) from the small intestine to other organs ■ waste product urea from the liver to the kidneys ...
6 of 8
What are the functions of red blood cells
Red blood cells transport oxygen from the lungs to the organs. In the lungs haemoglobin combines with oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin. In other organs oxyhaemoglobin splits up into haemoglobin and oxygen
7 of 8
Why do red blood cells not have a nucleus
Unlike other cells red blood cells have no nucleus, this allows red blood cells to contain the maximum amount of haemoglobin, which means that they can carry a lot of oxygen
