Divide between the Jacobins and the Girondins- Robespierre and the Jacobins endorsed the rioting as a necessary component of revolution- the Girondins condemned mob rule and the Plain swung towards the Girondins.

The National Convention ordered a levy of 300,000 soldiers.

Why did the revolt in the Vendee occur?

The people objected to fighting for a government that they didn't agree with, especially after the Civil Constitution of the Clergy (1790), as the Vendee was deeply religious, with only 1/4 of priests swearing the oath.

How many rebels were raised?

10,000 rebels against 1,300 National Guardsmen- began battles all over the region including the small town of Cholet.

The CPS was committed on 6th April 1793.

The National Guard had to be deployed to bring riots in Paris, caused largely by bread prices, under control.

During the journee of the 2nd June 1793- 80,000 sans-culottes and National Guardsmen surrounded the Convention and demanded the dismissal of Girondin ministers.

What was the result of the journee of the 2nd June 1793?

29 Girondin deputies were arrested.

What happened as a result of the Girondin purge?

July 1793- Charlotte Corday assassinated Marat, and was then guillotined by the Revolutionary Tribunal.

What happened to the CPS as a result of the Girondin purge?

CPS became far more radical- composed largely of revolutionary Jacobins.
