The Atmosphere

?
Name the 3 naturally occurring greenhouse gases
Carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour
1 of 15
How do greenhouse gases effect the earth?
They keep the earth warm
2 of 15
What is the main cause for the increase in carbon dioxide emissions?
Large quantities of fossil fuels being burned for transport
3 of 15
What is the main source of methane gas?
Digestion in cattle produces methane (cattle farming)
4 of 15
What is global warming?
An increase in the Earth's temperature
5 of 15
Name the five effects of global warming
Sea level rise, Frequent storms, Increased rainfall, changes in wildlife patterns, changes in food production
6 of 15
Why is sea level rise a problem?
Flooding and coastal erosion becomes a risk
7 of 15
Why are frequent storms a problem?
More rain and storms leads to more flooding and erosion
8 of 15
Why is increased rainfall a problem?
Because where rainfall increases in some areas, it decreases in others meaning droughts become a problem for areas on the equator
9 of 15
Why is changes to food production a problem?
Some regions can't produce food due to changes in rainfall patterns, droughts, flooding, high temperatures and pests
10 of 15
Define carbon footprint
The amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases given out over the full life cycle of a product, service or event.
11 of 15
How can we reduce our carbon footprint?
Using alternative energy sources (solar cells). Energy conservation (increase insulation, use LED bulbs). Carbon capture (move CO2 underground by pipes). Carbon taxes. Carbon neutral fuels (Ethanol from fermentation of crops)
12 of 15
What are the problems with reducing carbon footprints?
There is still scientific disagreement. LICs can't afford it, it is very expensive. USA and China not part of Kyoto Protocol (treaty to lower greenhouse gas emissions). People aren't educated. Standard of living has increased (more electrical devices
13 of 15
What life style changes have caused higher carbon footprints?
More electrical devices being used. Long commutes to work. People travelling further for holidays. People wanting warmer houses.
14 of 15
What is formed when fuels burn?
Carbon, Hydrogen (sometimes sulphur)
