What is grading?
When a pattern is done, it can be enlarged or reduced to produce other sizes

What is the basic block?
the original pattern, before reshaping

What is labelling?
When patterns are labelled so they are easier to understand

what is Notching?
When notches are cut into edges of the pattern pieces to indicate where one pattern piece fits with another

what is the seam allowance?
It is the margin that is allowed for sewing the fabric pieces together. It is usually 1.5cm

What is the Ease?
This is the extra fabric that is allowed on a pattern to make a garment more comfortable.

What is the alteration line?
Usually double line on the pattern which allows you to change the pattern as you need. e.g. shorten or lengthen

What is the straight grain?
It is a vital element of any pattern. It ensures that the fabric sits or hangs the correct way when you cut it out and assemble the garment.

What does the straight grain usually look like?
A straight line with arrow heads on either end. It lies parallel to the selvedge

What is the definition of a toile and what does it do?
A prototype product made from calico. It checks that everything is correct before starting the final product.

What is good about making a toile?
It saves money and time

What is a sealed sample and what is it for?
When a sample of the actual garment is made with the correct fabrics, trimmings and components sealed in a plastic bag. This is then available to the factory floor so that deatils can be checked.
