Tests for Functional Groups

Alkenes
Alkenes decolourise bromine water.
1 of 7
Haloalkanes
Silver nitrate - chloroalkanes form a white precipitate, bromoalkanes cream precipitate, iodoalkanes pale yellow.
2 of 7
Phenols
Sodium hydroxide will dissolved in phenols and the solution will not effervesce on addition of a carbonate.
3 of 7
Carboxylic acids
Effervescence with sodium carbonate - the gas is CO2 which will turn limewater cloudy.
4 of 7
Carbonyl groups (aldehydes and ketones)
Forms an orange precipitate with 2,4-DNPH
5 of 7
Aldehydes
Forms a silver mirror with Tollens' reagent - sodium hydroxide solution and dilute ammonia solution in a hot water bath.
6 of 7
Primary and secondary alcohols
Solution turns from orange to green with acidified potassium dicromate.
