Homodiegetic narrator
A narrator who's also the story's protagonist, e.g Amir in The Kite Runner

Heterodiegetic narrator
Narrator who doesn't take part in the story.

Extradiegetic narrator
Narrator who's outside the story's universe.

Intradiegetic narrator
Narrator who's inside the story's universe.

Focalizer
The character whose story is told, and whose perspective it's told from. E.g Amir in The Kite Runner

Spatial point of view
Physical position of narrator in relation to surroundings

Perspective
How a character interprets events, other characters, setting etc

Direct speech
Where speech is reported by repeating actual words of the speaker, e.g “[I’m so angry”, he said.

Indirect speech
Where speech is reported without quoting the speaker, e.g “He said he was angry.”

Free indirect speech
Form of indirect speech; speaker doesn’t use a reporting clause.

Narrative report of a speech act –(NRSA)
Form of speech presentation; narrator reports speech by summarising content (w/o using actual words uttered by character)e.g saying “She disagreed,” rather than writing out the actual words of a character

Monologue
Speech given by one character in order to express thoughts/emotions.

Duologue
A conversation between two characters.

Stream of consciousness
Narrative method which attempts to emulate the nature of a character’s inner thoughts.

A narrator situated outside the story, who knows everything about the characters and universe
