Tectonics Flash Cards

?
Where do volcanoes occur?
Volcanoes occur in linear patterns along plate boundaries. To be specific, volcanoes can be found in the Pacific ring of fire. Volcanoes can also be found in hotspots.
1 of 8
What is a hotspot?
Where hot magma rises from the mantle to the crust, forming volcanoes.
2 of 8
Explain the distribution of earthquakes.
Earthquakes occur in linear patterns along plate boundaries. To be specific, earthquakes can occur along the Atlantic Ridge. Some earthquakes occur in the middle of plates where there is a weakness in plate and a build up of pressure.
3 of 8
What is the difference between an oceanic and continental plate?
Oceanic rock is denser, under the water and is basalt. Where as, continental plates are lighter, made of granite and are on land.
4 of 8
Where is Montserrat?
It is located in the Caribbean. North-west of Guadeloupe.
5 of 8
What is constructed at a collision plate boundary?
Fold Mountains.
6 of 8
What happens at a collision plate boundary?
Two continental plates collide with each other, (move towards each other) and create fold mountains as the land is forced upwards. The Himalayas were created like this.
7 of 8
What happens at a constructive plate boundary?
Two plates move away from each other. The magma rises through the gap and when it solidifies, it forms new land.
