Benioff Zone
Found between an oceanic and continental plate and is the zone where the plates are touching and where the most friction pressure is built up.
1 of 14
Wadati-Benioff Zone
Found between two oceanic plates and is the zone where the plates are touching and where the most friction pressure is built up.
2 of 14
Lithosphere
Part of the crust- oceanic/continental
3 of 14
Asthenosphere
upper mantle
4 of 14
Mesosphere
lower mantle
5 of 14
Convection Currents
circular motions of the magma in the mantle which causes the crust above it to move either together or apart.
6 of 14
Continental Drift
The movement of the plates on the crust causes by convection currents in the mantle.
7 of 14
Vulnerability
The susceptibility of a group of people to a tectonic event.
8 of 14
Resilience
The ability of the people in the area of a tectonic event to deal with the aftereffects of the event.
9 of 14
Hazard
When a tectonic event develops into something more serious and communities, the environment and economy are affected.
10 of 14
Disaster
When a hazard develops into something extremely serious and communities, the environment and economy are affected. Usually impacts are much longer term and have a wider scale.
11 of 14
Moment Magnitude Scale (Mw)
Measures size of earthquake in terms of energy released. Uses all energy released by all shockwaves as well as area of rupture and movement.
12 of 14
Tsunami Intensity Scale
Scale based on height of wave and type of damage the wave causes.
13 of 14
Pressure and Release Model (PAR)
Considers the human factors which make a place vulnerable to a hazard and the physical factors which cause the hazard. This model intends to show how at risk a place is to a particular hazard becoming a disaster.
