Tectonic Disasters

?
What is a natural hazard?
An event with the potential to threaten life and property, where natural and human systems meet.
1 of 9
What is a disaster?
A hazard that causes a significant impact on a vulnerable population, where a natural and vulnerable human system interact.
2 of 9
What is vulnerability?
A community which is not prepared to deal with a hazard, through unsafe conditions, lack of education, location, development, governance etc.
3 of 9
What is resilience?
The ability of a community to resist, absorb and recover from the effects of a hazard.
4 of 9
What is the hazard risk equation?
A measurement of risk (the probability of a hazard occurring that leads to loss of life/livelihood). R = H x V / C
5 of 9
What is the PAR model?
The PAR (pressure and release model) is based on the idea that a disaster is the interaction between processes generating vulnerability and the natural hazard event.
6 of 9
What are root causes?
The first step to vulnerability, due to limited access to power, structure and resources or political/economic ideologies.
7 of 9
What are dynamic pressures?
Resulting from the root causes, there is a lack of skills, training, investment, freedom as well as population growth, deforestation, arms spending, corruption, and debt.
8 of 9
What are unsafe conditions?
Dynamic pressures lead to unsafe conditions and a vulnerable population. This might be a fragile physical environment or local economy, poor construction standards, poverty etc.
