3 of 15
define in vivo and in vitro
in vivo: in direct exposure to the phobic object. in vitro: in imaginary exposure to the phobic object
4 of 15
identify the four stages of treatment
functional analysis, construction of anxiety hierarchy, relaxation training and gradual exposure
5 of 15
define functional analysis
questioning in order to fully comprehend the phobia and it's triggers
6 of 15
define construction of anxiety hierarchy
decides on which situations involving the phobic object would be least to most anxious for the client. e.g. most would be holding a snake and least would be picturing a snake in your mind
7 of 15
define relaxation training
client is taught techniques to help them relax when they are confronted with the phobic object that work for them e.g. listening to music

STRENGTH: goals
there are clear goals for each session established by the client and the therapist together and so it is easy to see how effective the treatment was as the results are also clear
12 of 15
WEAKNESS: stage 4
some psychologists say that gradual exposure alone is enough to treat the phobia and that the other stages of treating it are unneccesary
13 of 15
WEAKNESS: Barlow
found that although 80% of people with agoraphobia temporarily improved after treatment, most of them relapsed
14 of 15
