What parameters affect synaptic integration?
Neuronal morphology and synapse distribution (complexity, relative distance, position etc), synaptic properties (amplitude of current flow at synapse), membrane properties (length constant and time constant)

What are the two aspects of synaptic integration?
Spatial integration (over space), temporal integration (over time).

Where does spatial synaptic integration matter?
When one presynaptic action potential activates mulitple synaptic contact sites simultaneously.

Why are small EPSPs important in the nervous system?
They can make the difference between a relatively large EPSP reaching threshold or not by summation.

Why does the length constant affect spatial synaptic integration?
Membrane potential changes spread passively and decay with distance from the synapse, the length constant determines how the potential exponentially declines.

What is the length constant equal to?
Lambda = square root of Rm/Ra

Why do things become non-linear when two synapses are activated?
Activity at the first opens ion channels which changes membrane resistance and the length constant so the effect of the second synapse is changed.

When does temporal synaptic integration matter?
When presynaptic neurons fire a train of action potentials. When presynaptic action potentials arrive in multiple neurons in brief succession. Important in hearing.

How does the time constant affect summation?
Short time constants will fail to summate but longer time constants will cause postsynaptic potentials to add up.
