hallucinations
unreal perceptions. most schizophrenics have auditory hallucinations e.g. hearing voices but they can appear in any sensory modality. formication - sensation of small insects crawling on or under your skin. feels realistic, can't know it isn't real.

unreal beliefs. no evidence to support delusion. persecution - person/group want to harm individual e.g. government organisation - mi5 are following you as you're a threat to national security. believe you're special/powerful/have superior knowledge/

disordered thinking
evident when examining speech of schizophrenics. described as: derailment or knight's move thinking. thoughts jump between topics with no logical flow. difficult to understand a schizophrenic's comments. speech is muddled/incoherent - frustrating f

poverty of speech - reduction in amount of speech & lacks meaning struggling simple/short answers.

avocation
indifferent/unconcerned with surroundings - no desire to take part in activities both work & personal they once enjoyed - lack of goal-directed behaviour - come across as disinterested

anhedonia
inappropriate reactions to pleasure e.g. football fan not showing joy at team winning.

flatness of affect
no emotion - converse without emotional intonation - no facial expressions e.g. smiling/grimacing. seem apathetic. don't show same signals of emotion when in a group e.g. not laughing at a joke. monotonous speech pattern - doesn't rise or fall.

catatonic behavior
fast, repetitive, useless movements to no movement at all. move for no discernable purpose, energetically pacing or wandering in circles. unexpected gestures & loud utterances. e.g. echopraxia adopt bizarre postures & facial positions. some remain
