Bundles of bull rushes or a line of corks used to aid the weaker swimmers when learning.

Influence of the Public Schools on Swimming early on
Swimming was spontaneous, unorganised, centred around natural facilities. What they has learnt at home they took into school. Swimming had no master input and wasn't supervised. It was a place for the boys to have fun – and wash!

Developed – More organised and structured, built in changing huts/Diving boards/instructors and competitions.

Head teachers regarded Hygenic, Thereputic(being immersed in water) and fun!

built a purpose built swimming bath. The schools that did this were even more impressive.
