Sorry to be picky, (might have rubbed off from my teacher) but S is displacement, not distance. Say for example you walk from one spot to another and then back to the beginning spot. How far you have walked would be the distance. The displacement would be 0, as you have not moved from your beginning spot. Therefore displacement is where you end up compared to the beginning, no matter how long it took to get there.
