Give examples of sustainable tourism?
Eco-tourism, getting local people involved (decisions, jobs, using local produce, using smaller scale operators), being respectful of local peoples traditions, creating national parks (Sonoran), using renewable energy recources.

On of Morroco's longest rivers (catchment of 35,000km, starts in the Atlas mountains.

What are the opportunities here?
43,000 hectares irrigated (water from canals), 225,000 people live in the Draa Valley, farming allows local people to prosper, 8% of locals work in tourism, attractions include dry sunny climate, Sahara desert, mud-brick houses.

What are the environmental challenges here?
Mansour Eddahbi dam restricts inflows of water and causes poor water quality, increased use of mechanised pumps means decreased water table/ increased salinity.

What are the demographic challenges here?
Population growth is around 2.5% every year, growth related to youthful age structure, not enough resources to meet the demands of growing population.

One of the poorest regions, 2 in 3 people live in poverty, rural poor and urban wealthy.

Located in south-east Utah, largest collection of arches in the world, 213mm of rain a year.

Made a national park in 1971, over 2000 sandstone arches, 833,000 visitors between may and September, outdoor activities (sightseeing, biking, climbing, camping), jobs for rangers, no permanent settlement/ economic activity.

Overcrowding at peak times, cars queuing at entrance, cars damage soil/ vegetation, damage to cryptobiotic crusts.

No shuttle systems damages the number of people entering the park.

What are the economic issues of tourism?
Jobs often low paid/ low skilled, revenue is often transferred over seas, regional disparity when tourism is focused in one area.

What are the socio-cultural issues of tourism?
Risky in particularly unstable areas, western tourists can cause offence in Muslim cultures, large numbers of people can overwhelm small villages and religious sites, tourist facilities can displace local people, overcrowding detracts experience.

What are the environmental issues of tourism?
Airports and hotel construction destroys natural landscape, discharge of untreated sewage into sea, high demand for hotel water, tourist facilities don't blend into the landscape.
