it sterilised conditions, killed of bacteria, prevented disease and allowed surgery to be successful.

Ether= vomiting, its flammable, hard to transport, deep dangerous sleeps(days), irritated the lungs.

it allowed experimentation, new techniques and medicines where found, wounds never seen before were now been able to be dealt with.

ligatures, cautery they also clamped the arteries to keep them in place.

why were ligatures bad?
they could not be sterilised so it caused infection.

what was cat gut used for?
stiches like ligatures, but it could be sterilised and then later on it would dissolve.
