Succession
The process by which an ecosystem changes over time.

Pioneer species
The first species to colonise an area during succession.

Climax community
The largest and most complex community of plants and animals an ecosystem can support.

Climatic Climax
The climax community for a particular climate.

Primary succession
Succession which happens on newly formed or exposed land with no soil.

Secondary succession
Succession which happens on land cleared of all plants but where the soil remains, e.g. after a forest fire.

Plagioclimax
When succession is stopped artificially. The climate community is called this.

Conservation
The protection and management of species and habitats (ecosystem).
