Define succession?
process by which an ecosystem changes over time
1 of 5
What are the 3 main causes of secondary succession?
1) natural catastrophes 2) human destruction of climax community 3) human managment
2 of 5
When does primary succession occur?
when species colonise new land thats been formed or exposed
3 of 5
What is a pioneer species?
the first species to colonise an area, they are tolerant of hostile abiotic conditions
4 of 5
Describe the stages of succession
pioneer species colonises, they die and decompose enriching the soil with humus, new organisms can colonise, also decompose, more humus so improved conditions, new species outcompete existing, higher biodiversity, reach climax community
