Structure and Function of Muscle

?
How many types of muscle are there?
3
1 of 16
Name the types of muscle found in the body.
Cardiac, smooth, skeletal.
2 of 16
What are the functions of muscle?
Locomotion, body stability, movement of body fluids, pump blood (peristalsis), regulation of body fluids (bladder), head production (85%)
3 of 16
Name the characteristics of muscle.
Excitability, contraction, stretchable, elasticity
4 of 16
What is meant by Epimysium?
The whole muscle
5 of 16
What is meant by Perimysium?
Bundles of fibres
6 of 16
What is meant by Endomysium?
Single muscle fibres
7 of 16
What is found in the microanatomy of muscle?
Myofibres (muscle cells)
8 of 16
What are the two protein filaments and state which is thick and which is thin.
Myosin (thick) and actin (thin)
9 of 16
What is tropomyosin?
The protein which covers myosin binding sites on actin when muscle contraction is not taking place.
10 of 16
What is the name of the elastic filament?
Titin
11 of 16
What is the sarcoplasm?
Cytoplasm within muscle cells.
12 of 16
What is found in abundance within the sarcoplasm and why?
Mitochondria as there is a high demand for ATP.
13 of 16
For improving the rate of respiration what is found within the muscle cells that is not an organelle?
An extensive capillary network to supply oxygen and food products, whilst removing CO2, water and heat.
14 of 16
What is the name of the equivalent in muscle cells to endoplasmic reticulum?
Sarcoplasmic reticulum
15 of 16
How does the muscle contract?
An action potential causes calcium ions to be released from the S.R. These bind to troponin which moves tropomyosin to uncover the actin binding sites. Actin-myosin bridges are formed using ATP to form a rachet mechanism which shortens the sarcomere
