The idea that society is like a coin with two sides, structural and social action. They cannot exist without the other. Through our actions we reproduce structures which then influence our behaviour.

1. Society contains a list of rules, expectation and norms about how we should live our life - we think this is true
2. we have a need for ontological security- need orderly, stable, predictable world.

What are the two ways we can change society?
1. We reflexively monitor our own actions- constantly reflect on actions and change them.
2. Unintended changes/ consequences- sometimes produce changes that were not the goal e.g. calvinism.

how did Paul Willis combine structure and social action in his study?
12 wc lads, rejection of school was a conscious decision (social action). Unintended consequence was becoming labourers for capitalism (structural).
