Economic system in which interests of the bosses and the workers are in conflict.

The owners of the means of production (bosses).

The workers.

Also called the bourgeoisie. They own the means of production, they are very powerful and also control the laws, media etc.

Ideas of the ruling class that dominate society.

Meritocracy
Idea that people who work hard can succeed.

False Consciousness
Idea that the proletariat are hoodwinked into thinking that life in a capitalist society is fair.

Oppositional subcultures
Some Marxists (Hall & Jefferson) believe that subcultures which are opposed to the capitalist system can exist within it. For example youth subcultures.
