What are the two types of strokes?
Ischaemic (blood clot), hemorrhagic (bleeding brain), both result in cell death
1 of 19
What is given to aid blood flow?
Blood thickener / thinner
2 of 19
When does rehab begin?
As soon as possible, 6 week proves worst effective due to increased plasticity
3 of 19
When do most improve?
Within 3m months, doesn't require trading as 'spontaneous biological recovery'
4 of 19
At what point is not much improvement seen?
After 6 months
5 of 19
What is Cartes 2017?
Arm motor function over time, found that arm motor control only improves from weeks 1-5, however strength and function improved over a year
6 of 19
What is Winters 2015?
Proportional recovery rule 3 aspects: patients only recover 70% of function, impairment/improvement after 48/72 is highly predictive of impairment at full recovery, severe strokes are often non recoverable
7 of 19
What is a corticospinal tract?
Allows transportation of information between neurons
8 of 19
What is DTI?
Diffusion tutor imagining, looks at water molecules
9 of 19
What can CST be used for?
Could be used to diagnose impairment, could be key to improving motor function
10 of 19
What is Maraka 2014?
Cortiospinal tract damage, demonstrated using DTI correlates with motor impairment at every level of ischaemic stroke
11 of 19
What is Schellz 2012?
Recovered tract pathway origination and correlation with motor function, correlation between M1 and SMA and motor function
12 of 19
Kim 2016?
Used TMS and DTT to evaluate CST remain, found intactt CST meant best recovery TMS and DTT is good teller - predict recovery
13 of 19
Strength training?
Found to show improvements in strength however little evidence this relates to function in tasks unless the task involves strength
14 of 19
Functional strength training?
Emphasises improving power and strength in specific muscles to improve function, e.g. shoulder and arm better placement accuracy of hand
15 of 19
Trunk movements?
Use trunk/shoulder griddle to improve function such as reaching, this head found to improve function of upper limb however may be counterproductive in long run
16 of 19
CIMT?
Constraint induced movement therapy
17 of 19
CIMT facts?
Thought function is impaired arm decreases due to non use, use of strong arm instead trained
18 of 19
CIMT summary?
May be appropriate for participants with residual wrist/hand function but no sign of impairment improvement
