Ischaemic : blood supply is stopped due to a blood clot and hemorrhagic: a weakened blood vessel supplying the brain bursts & causes brain damage

Face may have dropped on one side, may not be able to lift one or both arms due to weakness, speech may be slurred or gargled

What is a transient ischaemic attack (TIA)?
Where the supply of blood to the brain is tempoarily interrupted, causing a 'mini stroke'. It should be treated seriously as it's a warning sign of a proper stroke happening.

How long do the symptoms of a TIA last?
A few minutes or hours

Give five medical interventions
Brain scans, immediate access to a high quality stroke unit, stroke specialised rehab unit, surgery to repair burst blood vessels in the brain (craniotomy), anticoagulants to prevent blood clots.

Give four lifestyle changes
Quit smoking, eat healthily, exercise regularly, lose weight if overweight/ obese.

Give four physical impacts of having a stroke
Weakness or paralysis, may have to see a physiotherapist, sessions of physio to regain muscle strength & control, may have problems with understanding (brain damage).

Difficulty with communication (verbal and written), spatial awareness affected, memory loss, concentration affected

May develop an anxiety disorder, upset/ angry etc

Will need support from family and friends, friends/ family help to motivate patient to achieve goals, friends/ family adapting to new needs eg. speaking slower
