Storage Devices and Media

?
Read Only Memory (ROM)?
Commands designed for read-only purposes, such as the computer boot-up instructions
1 of 27
Random Access Memory (RAM)?
Holds the data needed by the programs currently in use; data is stored in the memory temporarily and lost when the PC is switched off
2 of 27
Benefits of RAM?
Bring to a system include greater ability to multi-task, and the ability to run memory intensive applications more smoothly
3 of 27
Hard Drive?
Stores the operating system software, application software and the user's documents and data files; come in a variety of sizes
4 of 27
Advantages of hard drive?
Relatively cheap, large capacity storage; fixed inside the system, so not easily misplaces; stores and retrieves data faster than some mediums (CD-ROMS)
5 of 27
Disadvantages of hard drive?
They can fail and are prone to damage upon impact, leading to lost or corrupt data; not as portable as other storage mediums, due to size, weight and internal location
6 of 27
CD/DVDs/Blu-ray?
Optical disc storage mediums, read and written to by a laser; faster access than a floppy disk, slower than a hard drive,; used for the distribution of software and other media such as music albums and movies
7 of 27
Advantages of CD/DVDs/Blu-ray?
Lightweight and easy to carry around; cheap to produce and buy in bulk; widespread compatibility
8 of 27
Disadvantages of CD/DVDs/Blu-ray?
Easily scratched/damaged, potentially making them unusable; limited storage capacity, particularly CDs
9 of 27
Zip Drive?
Medium capacity removable disk storage system; disks hold between 100MB and 750MB, and are used for long-term data backup
10 of 27
Advantages of zip drive?
Sturdy and durable for long-term use
11 of 27
Disadvantages of zip drive?
Disks are more expensive than CDs or DVDs; not many computers have zip drives, meaning a portable drive is required
12 of 27
Magnetic Tape/DAT drive?
Uses magnetic tape technology as an external device for large files; typically used for offline, archival data storage; mostly used by organisations to backup vast amounts of data (tapes can store over 800MB)
13 of 27
Advantages of Magnetic Tape/DAT drive?
Tapes are relatively cheap and provide large capacity storage; sturdy and durable for long-term use
14 of 27
Disadvantages of Magnetic Tape/DAT drive?
Quite slow at reading and writing data; requires a tape steamer to read and write data
15 of 27
Memory sticks?
Used for storing and transferring files, and come in many different sizes; usually connected to computers and devices via uSB
16 of 27
Flash memory cards?
Often used by digital cameras and MP3 players to store the photographs and songs; also inserted into card readers connected/built-in to computers, to allow files to be transferred to and from the cards
17 of 27
Advantages of memory sticks and cards?
Small, light and easy to carry around; large storage capacity for their size
18 of 27
Disadvantages of memory sticks and cards?
Very easy to break; data can be lost if you do not properly remove the device from the computer after saving
19 of 27
Solid State Disks (SSD)
Work the same as a hard drive but uses chip technology instead of disk technology; will eventually replace traditional hard drives as the chip is smaller than the disk
20 of 27
Advantages of SSD?
Lower failure rate and faster access to storage than traditional hard disk drives; quieter than traditional hard disk drives
21 of 27
Disadvantages of SSD?
Will remain expensive until they become more commonly used; slower to write to than traditional hard disk drives
22 of 27
Online Storage?
Works the same as a hard drive and sits on a serve on a website on the Internet; will usually pay a small fee to keep their work saved and kept secure
23 of 27
Advantages over local storage of online storage?
Large quantities of files can be stored and shared with friends and family
24 of 27
Disadvantages over local storage of online storage?
Reliance on another company to keep your data secu
