Storage

?
What is volatile memory?
This is a type of computer memory that will only keep its data as long as the power stays on. When the power is switched off, all the data is gone.
1 of 17
What is non-volatile memory?
It is a type of memory that does not require power to keep its data intact. Stored on a chip
2 of 17
What is ROM?
ROM is a memory chip where essential system instructions (BIOS) are permanently stored. The data held on ROM can be read but not changed. ROM is non volatile, meaning that the data stored on it will not be lost when the computer is off

What is RAM?
Random access memory is the memory in a computer that is used to store computer programs while they are running any information the programs need to do their job. Information in the RAM can be read and written quickly in any order. Fast temporary
4 of 17
Define storage capacity
the greater the storage capacity, the more data that can be stored on the device
5 of 17
Define storage density
the more storage you can store in a smaller space, the better
6 of 17
What is access time?
the time it takes to access specific data/ corresponding time to store data
7 of 17
What are the advantages of hard drives?
Very high transfer rate. Very high storage capacity. External hard drives are excellent for back ups. Enables more storage space (internal and external hard drives).
8 of 17
What are the disadvantages of hard drives?
Can be expensive. External hard drives not as portable as other storage media like memory sticks
9 of 17
What are the advantages of using optical disks?
CD-RW – rewritable. Cheap to purchase. Generally large storage capacity. Excellent for distribution purposes.
10 of 17
What are the disadvantages of using optical disks?
CD-R disks are writable only once, Slow transfer rate
11 of 17
What are the advantages of using magnetic tape?
Ideal for backup purposes, Useful for large organisations
12 of 17
What are the disadvantages of using magnetic tape?
Slow transfer rate – not ideal for storage which is needed quickly
13 of 17
What are the advantages of using memory sticks?
Large storage capacity, Relatively cheap, Portability, Not prone to physical damage (scratches)
14 of 17
What are the disadvantages of using memory sticks?
Small size = easily stolen, Easily forgotten – e.g. left in the computer, Slow transfer rate in comparison to magnetic disks and hard drives.
15 of 17
What are the advantages of cloud storage?
Accessible from any location, Ideal for backups, The storage space used is the only space paid for. (cheap)
16 of 17
What are the disadvantages of cloud storage?
Internet access required
