the ballet begins with a voice reading an extract from DAVID DAY'S DOOMSDAY BOOK OF ANIMALS. he explains how the great auk became extinct. there is the music of howling wind to suggest polar regions bleak and empty.

quiet chords on the harp give a lighthearted cheryp tune. two layers use a cycle,it repeats played by woodwind instuments or string intruments. it also shows a real life cafe environment.

-heels together in 1st position. body tilts to the left. he raises a forefinger to the left side of head(TELLING US TO THINK) circular motion,begins STAGE LEFT mainly centre stage weaving in and out of each other. he SKIMMS ALONG THE GROUND-BUOYANT.

begins with the rat lying on the floor with back to audience. culed up on his side knees bent to chest. he circles ankles,rolls over and around (UNCOMFORTABLE AND IS WAKENING). gradually he stands up hands drawn into chest like paws.

deep drum rolls are occasionally heard. this coincides with the rat dancing at a low level. at the end the music SLOWS as the rat RETURNS TO HIS SLUMBER. a series of STRONG CHORDS MATCH HIS JUMPING,HOPPING OFF STAGE SCRATCHING.
