What is E –Z isomerism?
The arrangement of elements around a C=C bond. E-isomerism (trans) opposite sides Z-isomerism (cis) same side.
1 of 11
What is Optical Isomerism?
When 4 different elements attach to one Carbon. 2 identical isomers are created but cant be superimposed. Optical isomers rotate the plane of polaration of polarised light indifferent ways: + isomer rotates clockwise, - isomer rotates anticlockwise
2 of 11
What is a racemic mixture?
A solution with equal concentrations of both enantiomers, its optically inactive and doesn’t rotate the plane of polarised light.
3 of 11
What is an enantiomer?
The two isomers of optical isomerism are called a pair of enantiomers.
4 of 11
What is the Chiral centre marked with?
*
5 of 11
How can you tell a Chiral carbon?
You can tell which carbon is chiral as it will have 4 different groups attached to it.
6 of 11
What measures optical rotation?
Polarimeter
7 of 11
What is light?
vibrating electric and magnetic fields which occur in all directions at right angles to the direction of the light wave.
8 of 11
How do you cut away all but one vibration?
Pass it through a filter (polaroid)
9 of 11
What does superimposed mean?
Can't be placed on top of each other
10 of 11
What is a stereoisomer?
Compounds/molecules with same structural formula but with bonds/atoms/groups arranged differently in space or in 3D
